Free Market Environmentalism vs. Political Environmentalism

  • Hannah Downey
  • PERC policy director Hannah Downey sits down with Kai Weiss of the Austrian Economics Center and CEO of Cedargold Richard Bonugli on The Green Market podcast to discuss the merits of free market and market-based environmentalism.

The trio examines the alternative to a market approach known as political environmentalism in which governments take action using regulatory tools to address environmental concerns. This approach pits different user groups against each other, creating a winner-takes-all solution. Furthermore, wins under one government administration are often reversed under another. Conversely, a market-based approach better aligns incentives to deliver lasting results that are not dependent upon political will.
