A core tenet of PERC’s unique approach to conservation is the idea that ownership provides clear incentives for people to care for their resources. Equally important is the understanding that when assets are freely available for anyone to use—or abuse—without consequences, those incentives disappear.
Our newest issue of PERC Reports magazine demonstrates the importance of incentives across a wide range of issues we have been working on over the past year. From overpopulated wild horses on our public rangelands to dwindling water supplies in the Great Salt Lake, incentives offer a path forward in which conservation goals can be achieved through cooperation that leaves all parties involved better off.
In recognizing the power of incentives, another important truth emerges: that thoughtful policy improves environmental outcomes by shaping incentives. That insight informs much of PERC’s research and this special issue of PERC Reports provides a few examples of those types of policies in action. We hope you enjoy it.
PERC Reports: The Magazine for Free Market Environmentalism has been exploring market solutions to environmental problems for more than four decades.
