A federal judge just set a new trial date for environmental activist Timothy DeChristopher, asserting that serving “the ends of justice” outweigh the college student’s right to a speedy trial.
DeChristopher, an economics major at the University of Utah, was indicted in April of 2009 on federal charges of violating an onshore oil and gas leasing act by deliberately bidding on parcels of land he had no intention of paying for.
The Bureau of Land Management holds quarterly auctions, offering up land that the agency has deemed suitable for oil and gas development. Should environmental groups be allowed to participate in federal lease auctions?
