PERC’s Catherine Semcer spoke with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about the role of incentives in preserving wildlife in Africa. Drawing on her experience as former Chief Operating Officer of Humanitarian Operations Protecting Elephants, Semcer discussed how limited hunting of big game and using revenue from hunting licenses to reward local communities for conserving wildlife habitat has improved wildlife populations and reduced poaching.
Catherine E. Semcer is a research fellow with the Property and Environment Research Center in Bozeman, Montana and the African Wildlife Economy Institute at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. She also serves as a member of the Sustainable Use and Livelihoods Specialist Group of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
