Joe Hamm

Joe Hamm is a conservation innovation fellow at PERC, as well as a final-year Ph.D. student at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, where he researches results-based payments for large carnivore conservation. He holds an MSc in Biology and an MA in Social Research, and has previously published peer-reviewed articles on the conservation of birds and sea turtles. Now working alongside a fantastic team from across the UK, Tanzania, Sweden, and the US, he conducts interdisciplinary research that aims to have clear relevance to conservation practice.

With his work at PERC, Joe is exploring the potential for a pilot project that would pay participating ranchers for the presence of grizzly bears on their land. He is excited to work with and learn from a wide range of people to design a conservation performance payment that delivers for ranchers and grizzlies alike. Joe’s visit to PERC is funded by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council.

In his free time, he can be found playing/watching football (soccer), working on his allotment, or down the pub.
