Juan Carlos Villaseñor-Derbez

Juan Carlos Villaseñor-Derbez is a 2026 Lone Mountain fellow, an assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric & Earth Science, and a core faculty member at the Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing. He studies the human dimensions of marine policy and environmental change. He is particularly interested in understanding how human incentives and environmental processes shape human behavior, and how this behavior feeds back into the system. He holds a BSc in Oceanography from Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (Mexico), and a Master’s and Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Management from UC Santa Barbara. He was also a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford, where he studied resilience and adaptation in Mexican small-scale fisheries.
